Advanced Workshop Series (Grades 6-10): Due to increasing interest, we will be offering four Advanced Workshops this summer for students grades 6-10! They will feature more advanced activities and concepts for a higher age group! If your child is interested in natural science, outdoor adventure, and animals, these workshops were made just for them!

Nature Explorer's Workshops (Grades 1-6): These FUN and EDUCATIONAL workshops provide children with unique learning experiences. Animals, Science, Rock Climbing, High Ropes Course, Kayaking, Hiking, Team Building, Music, and more! Workshop participants get to go behind the scenes and learn what it takes to become a professional animal caregiver at the Barn Nature Center! Youth can also climb our indoor rock wall or relax with friends in our game room. In addition, each workshop features interactive and experiential activities designed to engage students in the Workshop's theme. We have both full day and half day workshops!
Each Nature Explorers Workshop is unique. Here is a list of our upcoming Fall/Winter 2019 Workshops:
Nature Hike 9/30/19 Come have an outdoor adventure with our guided Nature Hike Workshop! Kids will be driven off site by our certified staff to a lovely local trail, where they will take in the scenery, learn about the animals, plants, and habitats along the trail, and play a series of sensory games to explore the environment! We will teach them the importance of "Leave No Trace" and how preserving our trails, parks, and other wild places helps our planet! When they arrive back at the Nature Center they will get to spend time learning about our animals and participate in their handling and daily care!
Stream Study 10/1/19 The Barn Nature Center's Stream Study workshop is an exciting way to learn about the importance of our waterways and get wet in the process! Kids will be driven down the street to Neshaminy Creek by our certified staff, where we will search for a variety of creatures and use our data to determine the health of the stream! This workshop is a great way to do real science in a fun and inclusive environment! When we get back to the Nature Center, we will learn and participate in the daily care of our animal residents, and spend some time climbing rock walls in the Adventure Center!
Vet Assistant Day 10/9/19, 12/30/19 Calling all animal lovers and future Veterinarians! The Barn Nature Center's Vet Assistant Day workshop is a fun and hands-on learning experience! Kids will learn what veterinarians do, why they are important, and what we as animal caretakers do to ensure and check the health of our animal residents! From taking weights to heart rates to administering medication, they'll get to observe and participate in it all! They'll also help us with the daily husbandry of our animals, and climb on our indoor rock walls!
Ecologist for a Day 11/5/19 From the sun to plants to prey to predator, students will learn about how energy is passed from one thing to the next within an ecosystem, and how all life is interconnected! Special attention will be paid to the ecology of Pennsylvania, and how some of the animals in our collection fit into the ecosystems of their native environment. They will also participate in the daily care and handling of our animal residents and do some rock climbing in the Adventure Center!
Wild About Turkeys! 11/27/19 In the spirit of Thanksgiving, students will learn all about Pennsylvania’s wild turkeys through a series of fun and interactive activities and games! They will also participate in the daily husbandry and handling of our animal residents. The day will conclude with rock climbing in our Adventure Center!
Animal Keeper for a Day 11/29/19, 12/26/19 Is your child a future zookeeper? Do they love taking care of animals? At our Animal Keeper for a Day workshop they will learn in detail what it takes to care for the Nature Center's amazing animal residents! They will learn what animals need to survive, as well as what the need to thrive! They'll help with diet prep, grooming, and even design their own enrichment project! At the end of the day they'll get to challenge themselves on our indoor rock wall!
Adventure Challenges 12/23/19 Is your child interested in excitement, adventure, and conquering their fears? In our Adventure Challenges workshop, kids will get to participate in many of the climbing elements in our indoor Adventure Center! They'll get to climb rock walls and high ropes elements, and learn to challenge themselves to go to new heights in a safe and exciting environment! They will also get to meet and participate in the care and handling of our animal residents!
Arctic Animals! 12/27/19 Students will learn about the different arctic and tundra ecosystems, and how they support life in such a harsh environment. They will also participate in the daily husbandry and handling of our exotic animal residents! The day will conclude with rock climbing in our Adventure Center.
Endangered Species 12/31/19 Students will learn about the Endangered Species Scale, as well as what causes some animals to become endangered. Special attention will be given to some of the endangered species that reside in our nature center, and what we can do to help! They will also participate in the daily husbandry of our animal residents. The day will conclude with rock climbing in our adventure center!
Half Day Workshops!
11/11, 12/4 12/13- Half Day Animal Husbandry! Students will learn about the daily care that goes into maintaining our over 140 exotic animals! They will learn how to feed, water, and handle the animals, as well as other things that we do to ensure their health and wellbeing.
11/26, 12/12- Half Day Adventure! Students will focus on our indoor high ropes course elements and rock climbing wall in the Barn's Adventure Center, challenging themselves to work as a team and climb to new heights!
12/20- Half Day Art of Nature! Students will learn how art is expressed by nature, and be able to express that themselves! There will be crafts and art projects utilizing natural materials and subjects, as well as drawing from life utilizing some of the animals at the nature center!
