These FUN and EDUCATIONAL workshops provide children with unique learning experiences. Animals, Science, Rock Climbing, High Ropes Course, Kayaking, Hiking, Team Building, Music, and more! Workshop participants get to go behind the scenes and learn what it takes to become a professional animal caregiver at the Barn Nature Center! Youth can also climb our indoor rock wall or relax with friends in our game room. In addition, each workshop features interactive and experiential activities designed to engage students in the Workshop's theme. Nature Explorers Workshops are typically designed for students in grades 1st through 6th.

Animal Keeper for a Day 1/21/19, 4/17/19 Is your child a future zookeeper? Do they love taking care of animals? At our Animal Keeper for a Day workshop they will learn in detail what it takes to care for the Nature Center's amazing animal residents! They will learn what animals need to survive, as well as what the need to thrive! They'll help with diet prep, grooming, and even design their own enrichment project! At the end of the day they'll get to challenge themselves on our indoor rock wall!
Vet Assistant Day 2/14/19, 4/19/19 Calling all animal lovers and future Veterinarians! The Barn Nature Center's Vet Assistant Day workshop is a fun and hands-on learning experience! Kids will learn what veterinarians do, why they are important, and what we as animal caretakers do to ensure and check the health of our animal residents! From taking weights to heart rates to administering medication, they'll get to observe and participate in it all! They'll also help us with the daily husbandry of our animals, and climb on our indoor rock walls!
Ecologist for a Day 2/15/19 From the sun to plants to prey to predator, students will learn about how energy is passed from one thing to the next within an ecosystem, and how all life is interconnected! Special attention will be paid to the ecology of Pennsylvania, and how some of the animals in our collection fit into the ecosystems of their native environment. They will also participate in the daily care and handling of our animal residents and do some rock climbing in the Adventure Center!
Birds of Prey! 2/18/19 Join us in welcoming Hawk Mountain Sanctuary and some of their fantastic birds to the Barn Nature Center! We will learn all about Birds of Prey and their incredible adaptations from people who conserve and study them in an interactive presentation. We'll even get to meet some of these amazing raptors up close in the Nature Center! After the presentation we will get some hands-on time learning about the Nature Center's animals and climb on the rock walls in the Adventure Center!
Adventure Challenges 4/18/19 Is your child interested in excitement, adventure, and conquering their fears? In our Adventure Challenges workshop, kids will get to participate in many of the climbing elements in our indoor Adventure Center! They'll get to climb rock walls and high ropes elements, and learn to challenge themselves to go to new heights in a safe and exciting environment! They will also get to meet and participate in the care and handling of our animal residents!
Earth Day Nature Hike! 4/22/19 Happy Earth Day everyone! The Barn Nature Center is very excited to be celebrating our planet with a guided Nature Hike Workshop! Kids will be driven off site by our certified staff to a lovely local trail, where they will take in the scenery, learn about the animals, plants, and habitats along the trail, and play a series of sensory games to explore the environment! We will teach them the importance of "Leave No Trace" and how preserving our trails, parks, and other wild places helps our planet! When they arrive back at the Nature Center they will get to spend time learning about our animals and participate in their handling and daily care!
The Magic of Metamorphosis! 5/21/19 Has your little scientist ever wondered how caterpillars turn into butterflies, or tadpoles turn into frogs? At our Magic of Metamorphosis! workshop, we will explore the life cycles of various animals and how they get from one stage of their life to another! We will play games, meet metamorphosing animals, and even create a butterfly feeder to attract them to your home and observe their metamorphosis for yourself! We will also interact and learn about the care of the Nature Center's many animal residents, and climb on our indoor rock walls!
Stream Study 5/27/19 The Barn Nature Center's Stream Study workshop is an exciting way to learn about the importance of our waterways and get wet in the process! Kids will be driven down the street to Neshaminy Creek by our certified staff, where we will search for a variety of creatures and use our data to determine the health of the stream! This workshop is a great way to do real science in a fun and inclusive environment! When we get back to the Nature Center, we will learn and participate in the daily care of our animal residents, and spend some time climbing rock walls in the Adventure Center!
After School Adventure! (Grades 7 and up) 1/28/19 Is your teen interested in animals, adventure, or science? This half day After School Adventure is especially for them! We will spend the afternoon doing challenging climbs on the ropes course in our Adventure Center, as well as learning in detail about the variety of exotic animals that live at the Nature Center! This program will be a pilot for a potential upcoming after school program for older kids!
Half Day Animal Care 3/15/19, 3/29/19 School out early? Come spend the afternoon with the animals at the Barn Nature Center! In this half day workshop kids will learn about animal husbandry, or the daily care of our over eighty exotic animal residents! We will prepare diets, spray and bathe animals, and handle them as well!
Half Day Adventure 3/28/19 Climbers, this one's for you! School's out early, so come to our Half Day Adventure workshop! Kids will spend the afternoon challenging themselves to climb to new heights on our rock wall and various high ropes elements in the Adventure Center! We'll also spend a while meeting and handling some of our animal residents!
