These FUN and EDUCATIONAL workshops provide children with unique learning experiences. Animals, Rock Climbing, Team Building, and more! Workshop participants get to go behind the scenes and learn what it takes to become a professional animal caregiver at the Barn Nature Center! Youth can also climb our indoor rock wall or relax with friends in our game room. In addition, each workshop features interactive and experiential activities designed to engage students in the Workshop's theme. Nature Explorers Workshops are typically designed for students in grades 1st through 6th. Our half-day Adventure Challenges Workshop on January 26, 2018 is designed for students in grades 7th through 12th.
Each Nature Explorers Workshop is unique. Here is a list of our upcoming Winter and Spring 2018 Workshops:
2/15/18, 3/29/18- Adventure Challenges Students will focus on our indoor high ropes course elements and rock climbing wall in the Barn's Adventure Center, challenging themselves to work as a team and climb to new heights! They will also participate in the daily care and handling of our collection of exotic animals.
2/16/18- Food Webs From the sun to plants to prey to predator, students will learn about how energy is passed from one thing to the next within an ecosystem, and how all life is interconnected! Special attention will be paid to Pennsylvania ecosystems, and how some of the animals in our collection fit into the food webs of their native environment. They will also participate in the daily care and handling of our animal collection. The day will conclude with rock climbing in the Adventure Center.
2/19/18- Live Birds of Prey Students will learn about birds of prey at this special workshop. They will get to dissect owl pellets and see a live bird of prey presentation courtesy of the Lehigh Valley Zoo. They will also participate in the daily care of our animal collection. The day will conclude with rock climbing in the Adventure Center.
3/30/18- Ecosystems and Habitats Students will learn about the earth’s many habitats and the ecosystems they sustain. Special attention will be given to some of the ecosystems and habitats that our resident animals are a part of! Students will also participate in the daily care and handling routine of our collection of exotic animals. The day will conclude with rock climbing in the Adventure Center.
4/2/18- Life Cycles Students will learn about the life stages of different types of animals. From egg to adult, we will go over animals who metamorphosize and change over the course of their lives! They will also participate in the daily care and handling routine of our collection of exotic animals. The day will conclude with rock climbing in the Adventure Center.
4/30/18- Stream Study Students will learn about the importance of clean and healthy waterways, as well as how we can keep our water clean. We will then take a field trip to the Neshaminy Creek to asses the water quality by looking for macroinvertebrates! They will then participate in the daily care and handling routine of our collection of exotic animals. The day will conclude with rock climbing in the Adventure Center. The Barn Nature Center Summer Camps offer youth the chance to get up close and personal with our over 80 rescued and re-homed animal residents. During our week-long programs, campers will embark on adventures filled with animals, science, and many other fun activities! Campers have the opportunity to become animal caretakers and will learn what it takes to keep our animal friends happy and healthy.
We offer two different camp programs. Our Youth Nature Camp is for children 6 years and up, while our Adventure Camp is for kids 9 years and up! Nature Camp features a variety of fun and educational activities, such as a veterinary assistant day, learning about enrichment, an offsite stream study and nature hike, rock climbing and more! Adventure Camp allows campers to dive deeper into their adventurous sides with rock climbing, our indoor high ropes course, rappeling station, an offsite stream study, and an off-site hiking and kayaking excursion!
Camp dates for Summer 2018 are up! All camps run 9:00am-3:00pm
Youth Nature Camp (6 years and up) June 25th – 29th July 23rd – 27th August 13th- 17th
Adventure Camp (9 years and up) July 9th – 13th August 6th – 10th August 20th-24th
$50 deposit to reserve camp registration + a small processing fee. This is a non-refundable deposit and is due upon registration.
Campers have the opportunity to learn what it takes to properly care for pets at home, as well as animals in a zoo or facility, by learning about nutrition, enrichment, and professional animal husbandry.
Our campers indulge in the beauty and wonder of nature learning about Ecosystems, Habitats, and their own back yard.
Our Team Building games, Rock Climbing, and High Ropes Course empower youth to develop communication skills, trust, confidence and work together as a cohesive group.
